SPICA...why are they the best female k-pop group! - Part 1 - Who is SPICA?

SPICA. This is probably the most underrated female k-pop group ever. How come that those talented ladies are not popular? How come that groups like f(x) (no offence to their fans) have bigger fan base than SPICA?

This article will introduce this amazingly talented group and try to persuade the world why should they become fans of SPICA.

WHO IS SPICA?

SPICA is a South Korean female group established under B2M Entertainment. They debuted in the beginning of 2012 with the song "Potently". The Members are:

Kim Boa

*14 Jan 1987 (28)
Leader, Main/Lead Vocalist

Before debuting, she worked for producing team, Sweetune, providing background vocals and harmonisation for several Korean artists and groups. She was also a vocal coach for KARA, Raina and Infinite under Sweetune. In 2013, she recorded a song "Tears Fallin'" for the official soundtrack of drama "That Winter, the Wind Blows". In the beginning of 2014, she recorded a cover version of "Say Something" with Eric Nam. In autumn of 2014, it was reported that she will go solo, while the rest of the members of SPICA formed a sub-unit, SPICA.S.

I really like her. She is an amazing singer and her "voice colour" is unique. She kind of gives the vibe of Emma Stone (who is one of my favourite actresses). Boa is also well-known for her crazy personality. She said in Weekly Idol that it often happens that she walks down the street and suddenly, she stops, sits down or lies down and takes pictures. Also while seeing her in Weekly Idol, you will totally fall for her personality.

You just have to love her, she is so cool!

The cover version of "Say Something" mentioned above. I am always moved by the emotions they put into the song.

She is sooo talented! - Can't wait for here solo debut :)

Park Si Hyun

* 26 Nov 1986 (28)
Vocalist, Rapper, Oldest Member

Park Si Hyun was born as Park Ju Hyun, but since she was young, her family called her Si Hyun. She changed her name in October 2014. Besides being a member of SPICA, she has been involved in acting and modelling. She starred in several MVs, e.g. "Bad Girls" by Lee Hyo Ri.

I like her as well. She is not as strong vocalist as Boa, for example, but comparing to other groups, she is often better than their lead vocalists. I also fell in love with her personality while watching them on Weekly Idol, her and Boa are definitely a material for variety shows. Both of them are confident, witty and really charming. She is also considered to be one of the better dancers in SPICA.

I love her "rapping" in Ghost

She was featured in Heo Young Saeng's song "Let It Go"

Can you spot her at 2:30?

Park Na Rae

* 23 Feb 1988 (26)
Main Vocalist

Park Na Rae attented Kyung Hee University, where she studied Postmodern Music. In 2009, she participated in Superstar K and ended it up on 6th position (out of the 10 final contestants). In the beginning of 2013, she featured in Loco's song "Take Care". In 2013, she also appeared in MV of her fellow member Kim Bo Hyung ("Crazy Girl"). In the same year, she featured in Mando & Chigi's song titled "He Says, She Says", and joined them to promote the song on several music shows. In 2014, she sang a song for the original soundtrack of drama "Sweden laundry", where she also made a guest appearance in episode 4, as Kim Yuri.

I think that Narae, along with Jiwon, is the most beautiful member of SPICA. I really like her with black hair. In my opinion, she should consider acting career as well, as she is usually the main person in SPICA's MVs (if there is a story, rather than dancing) and she did quite well in Sweden Laundry. Also she is capable of pursuing a solo career, as her vocals are very good as well.

I really like this song :)

Yang Ji Won

* 5 Apr 1988 (26)
Vocalist, Visual

Jiwon debuted in 2007 with the girl group Five Girls under Good Entertainment. This group also included Uee (After School), Hyo Seong (Secret), Yubin (Wonder Girls) and G.NA. The group starred in a reality show on MTV called Diary of Five Girls, but never debuted due to financial problems. Then she was supposed to debut in the girl group T-ara in 2009. Before debuting, the group  provided song "Good Person" for drama "Cinderella Man". She has actually never debuted with T-ara as she was dropped from the group due to creative differences. Afterwards, she moved to her current agency, B2M Entertainment. In 2014 she contributed to the OST of drama "God's Gift - 14 Days" with the song "나라면".

Jiwon has been also involved in modelling and acting. She starred in two movies "Death Bell" and "More than Blue". She also had a supporting role in MBN drama "What's Up", where she starred along the stars like Daesung (Big Bang), Jo Jung Suk, Im Joo Hwan, Oh Man Suk or Kim Ji won. She also appeared in several music videos - e.g. Boyfriend's "I'll Be There" or Baechigi ft. AiLee "Shower of Tears". It was reported that she will take part in SBS drama "Divorce Lawyer in Love" which will air in March 2015.

Yang Ji Won is definitely the visual of the group, however, unlike other visuals, she can sing very well. She is considered as the sexiest member by her fellow SPICA members and it seems to be proven in Weekly Idol. I really look forward to see her in the SBS drama and I hope that it will bring more attention to SPICA. Who knows, she might appear on Running Man :)

Kim Bo Hyung

* 31 Mar 1989 (25)
Main/Lead Vocalist, Maknae

When she was in high school, her singing abilities started to show as she won several contests. In 2007, she auditioned to be a part of JYPE, however she left the agency due to personal circumstances. In 2008, she joung YGE and was one of the potential members of 2NE1. However, in early 2009 she was dropped from the group's line-up because of differences in music style. Before she left the company, the CEO of YGE (Yang Hyun Suk) wrote her a recommendation letter and introduced her to B2M Entertainment. In 2013, she released her solo single "Crazy Girl", which was composed by Lee Hyo Ri.

Bohyung is my favourite. I love her singing abilities. It can be seen that she is quite shy whenever SPICA appears on some shows, but whenever she sings or just talks about music, she is really confident.

One of her many amazing live performances

So those are SPICA girls, aren't they amazing? I think they are!! And funny thing is that I discovered them accidentally on YT, while watching their cover version of "Cups". I would have probably not known about them as I am not really a big k-pop fan (I prefer not so main stream artists). I am sooo glad that I found out about them as they are amazing and they deserve to be in the spotlight. Come on Korea! Please, appreciate this gem of yours!!

I will be back with Part 2, where I will discuss their (own) songs.

Part 3 will then look at their cover songs and harmony.
